Sawtooth Mountains - Sept 24-27, 2027

A small scene on the forest floor in fall filled with lupine leaves, pine needles, and pine cones. Often these leaves are accompanied by colorful flowers in spring. There is still much beauty in the non-flowing season.

Join Adrian Klein and Zack Schnepf in Stanley, Idaho where we will be photographing forests, mountains, and lakes as fall colors come out with chilly mornings in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. From the wonderful forest floor finds to the jagged Sawtooth mountain range, and even a grove of aspens if fall color timing is on our side. In the past we have been fortunate to photograph birds which has included woodpeckers and bald eagles. While the focus is on nature we also plan to visit a ghost town with old preserved buildings on one of the field outings.

It's worth noting that the Sawtooth National Forest did experience large impactful fires in 2024. At least one location we plan to visit did get partially burned. Despite this, I am bringing a group back to this wonderful region because I changed my mindset years ago. Wildfire, for good and for bad, is a more regular occurrence across the West. Even though the land or forest takes time to recover, and in some cases may never look the same, there is beauty in the destruction and resulting rebirth. I even showcase these photos in their own gallery on my site. As much as I would prefer these fires never happen, I know they can be an important part of the natural cycle of our forest ecosystems. Not to mention I have an interest in seeing impacted areas and the possible photos awaiting in the changing landscape. See at least a couple of photos from burned forests in the area on this page. Lastly, there are beautiful spots we will visit that haven't been impacted by past fires.
